A huge fire has broken out in a field in a village north of Ipswich.

Eight Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service crews were dispatched to the incident on land off Old Ipswich Road, Claydon, shortly after 2.30pm on Friday.

Engines from Woodbridge, Princes Street, Framlingham, Hadleigh, Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds stations are in attendance.

An eyewitness said: “We saw smoke from one of the buildings and we came out to look and it has all gone up so quickly.”

The incident comes after a blaze was reported in nearby Barham last week.

Station manager Coldwell said: “On arrival crews were faced with approximately 12 acres of cut and standing crop well alight to the rear of the Hillside Business Park.

“Due to the rapid fire growth crews quickly upped the number of pumps at the scene to eight.

“Crews have been working hard to prevent the fire spreading to neighboring fields.

“The fire has now been surrounded and we will be scaling back soon.”

The fire service is also asking people to take care if having an open barbeque and when putting out cigarettes due to the dry conditions and large amount of standing crop.

Police officers have also been seen in the area.
